Hello! I am very excited to teach chemistry at Cleveland. I truly love teaching chemistry. More than anything else, I want my students to leave this class with confidence in their ability to "do science" and to see themselves as scientists and engineers, at least a few times in the year. I also want my students to have an appreciation and respect for how scientific knowledge, theories, and laws are developed and how engineers work in teams to solve problems.
I live in Sellwood with my wife, Amanda, and two daughters, Annabelle (7), and Elsa (5). No, we did not name them after the movie came out. Rather, Elsa was a name we chose right before the movie Frozen came out. I have lived in Portland permanently now for about 14 years, and grew up in Lake Oswego. My hobbies are furniture making and spending time with my family.
I graduated from Whitman College in 1998 with a degree in Biology (and an undeclared minor in chemistry). I graduated from Lewis and Clark College in 2002 with a Masters in the Art of Teaching. I have taught almost everything for the past 15 years: from middle school algebra to social studies to genetics and microbiology to cooking to physics to biology and AP Chemistry. I have been teaching chemistry for the last 11 years, at Roosevelt High School and most recently here at Cleveland High School for the past year. I can't imagine doing anything else except chemistry because it allows us a very different perspective on the world around us, ways to interact with it and ways to save it.
Here's to a great year!
